Megabytes to gigabytes, for data plans, upload limits, backup sizing and working out whether a folder will fit. This converter offers both conventions, because MB and MiB are genuinely different units and the gap between them is where most storage confusion comes from.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB?
Both, depending on who's counting. Storage manufacturers, network operators and the SI standard use decimal: 1 GB = 1000 MB. Operating systems have traditionally used binary: 1024 MB, properly called a gibibyte (GiB). Neither is wrong, they're just different units — the converter lists MB/GB and MiB/GiB separately so you can pick.
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
Because the manufacturer sold you 1,000,000,000,000 decimal bytes and your operating system is dividing by 1024 three times to display it. 10¹² ÷ 1024³ = 931.3. Nothing is missing — the same bytes are being labelled with a different unit.
