Most syllabuses grade by category with a percentage attached to each: homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25%, final 35%. Enter your average in each category and its weight, and this gives your overall grade.
The detail that makes it accurate: leave a category's score blank until it's actually been graded. Blank categories are excluded and your grade is calculated over the weight completed so far — which is what an instructor means by your "current grade". Typing 0 for an unwritten final instead treats it as a genuine zero, which is why so many students think they're failing a course they're passing.

What's the difference between this and the plain grade calculator?
This one is for syllabuses that assign a percentage to each category. The plain grade calculator is for courses graded on total points, where every assignment goes into one pot. Using the wrong one is a real error: if homework is worth 20% of the grade but represents 60% of the available points, totalling points overweights it badly.
Should I enter 0 for assignments I haven't taken yet?
No — leave them blank. A blank category is excluded from the calculation and your grade is scaled over the weight graded so far. Entering 0 tells the calculator you scored zero, which is a very different claim and will show a much lower grade than you have.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
It still works — the result is scaled over whatever the weights total. The tool shows the running total and flags when it isn't 100%, since that's usually a typo or a missing category rather than a deliberate choice.
How do I handle a category with several assignments?
Average them first and enter that as the category score. If the assignments within a category are different sizes, use the grade calculator on that category alone to get its percentage, then bring the result back here.
