Frequently asked questions
Do I need to upload my PDF to use these tools?
Usually not. Merge, split, JPG↔PDF and page extraction all run locally in your browser via WebAssembly — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and they still work. Compress, OCR, unlock, protect and the Office conversions do process server-side because they need Ghostscript, Tesseract, qpdf or LibreOffice; those tools disclose it in their own interface and delete the file as soon as the job finishes.
Is there a file-size or daily limit?
No daily limit and no sign-up. For the in-browser tools the practical ceiling is your device's memory rather than a policy — a few hundred megabytes is normally fine on a desktop. Server-side tools have a per-file cap to keep the queue moving, shown on each page.
Why do free PDF sites have a bad reputation?
In March 2025 the FBI's Denver field office warned that fake free file-converter sites were delivering malware and harvesting uploaded documents for personal data, banking details and crypto seed phrases. That risk comes from uploading, which is why the tools here that can run locally do run locally, and the ones that can't say so up front.
Will converting change my document's formatting?
Merging, splitting and rotating are lossless — pages are copied verbatim, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution. Format conversions (PDF to Word especially) reconstruct layout and are very good but not perfect; check tables and multi-column pages before sending anything on.
